Acupuncture Mondays at Simply Spa - by Melissa Marcy
I am so grateful to be part of the Simply Spa team. I have been welcomed with open arms in the form of supportive coworkers, doctor referrals, and return patients, since I joined the Santee community last year.
In 2012 I began serving the Eastlake area of Chula Vista as a massage therapist practicing Asian Bodywork Therapy, and in 2016, I expanded my South Bay practice to include acupuncture. In 2017 my acupuncture practice grew to include the East County.
Everyone can benefit from acupuncture. I work with adolescents with ADHD, nonagenarians with chronic pain, and men and women of all ages in between, dealing with issues like stress, anxiety, insomnia, migraines, allergies, IBS, facial paralysis, and TMJ and body pain.
A common question about acupuncture is: Does it hurt? The answer is no. Very thin, sterile, single-use needles are used, and many people do not even feel the insertion. Though a sensation may be felt during treatment, painful is not an accurate word to describe acupuncture. In fact, if I had to pick one word, I would describe acupuncture as relaxing.
Many people find themselves on my treatment table because they have “tried everything else” to manage their conditions and nothing is working, or because they want to avoid pharmaceuticals or surgery. Others are referred to me by their doctors or loved ones, and arrive skeptically. Most are surprised at how effective acupuncture is at treating their overall well-being. Often, people come in for something like neck pain, and after a few sessions, find themselves not only pain-free, but sleeping better and less stressed.
Everyone responds differently to treatment. While some experience immediate effects, others require a few sessions, so I always recommend frequent visits initially, and gradually spacing out appointments as progress is made, until acupuncture serves as preventative medicine rather than retroactively.
